The New Stuff

Microsoft uses Normal.dotm file as a template for new word document. Every time you open MS Word the document and its properties you see are based on the Normal Template having Filename: Normal.dotm .

Sometimes you deliberately or accidentally make changes in Normal template which effects every new word document. So if you want to reset the Normal Template; here is the easiest way.

Navigate to the file Normal.dotm using following path.

MS OFFICE 2007 / 2010 / 2013

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
(Based on Windows7)

  • Just delete the Normal.dotm file. Make sure that Ms Word (Office) is not open at the time of deletion.
  • After deletion; reopen MS Word and you will see the default template has been restore.

Warning:

If you have customized Normal template, all customization will be lost.
